Plants small to large. Leaves one to several, terete, lanceolate to elliptic, glabrous or variously pubescent or glandular. Raceme subspicate, racemose or corymbose; bracts membranous; bracteoles absent. Flowers spreading, erect, or pendulous, whitish or yellowish with broad green midrib associated with media concentration of veins, tepal whorls monomorphic or dimorphic; tepals thick-textured, oblong; style cylindrical or prismatic. Capsule ovoid or oblong, acute or retuse, with or without paraseptal crests; seeds angular, semilunate or discoid.
Mainly sub-Saharan Africa, especially winter-rainfall region, with 1 sp. extending into Ethiopia.
